Local school pilots new leadership scheme

19/10/11

A Bridgend-based primary school has joined forces with a child development company to launch a new scheme to encourage children to become young leaders

Tremains Primary School is piloting a Young Leaders Award scheme which has been created by SuperStars to help educate children about teamwork and to develop their leadership skills.

As part of the scheme children will be taught how to plan, deliver and evaluate their own sessions whilst developing vital life skills such as teamwork and communications skills. Pupils will be encouraged to develop their skills in the classroom and during break time, taking on responsibility for younger children and engaging them in playground activities.

On implementing the new scheme, Jane Williams, head teacher of Tremains Primary School saidWe are delighted to have piloted this initiative. As the pupils continue to grow we felt it was fundamental to help develop their leadership skills and teach them how to become more responsible for themselves and others and more importantly to educate them how to do it correctly and effectively.

“The scheme has been a huge success within the school, with the support of teachers and parents alike, we have witnessed a number of pupils really grasping the concept and taking responsibility for others as well as themselves.”

SuperStars has been employed by Tremains Primary School since October 2006 to provide high quality teaching for children, filling teaching time left by teachers who are away from the classroom planning, preparing and assessing lessons.

Founder and managing director of SuperStars, James Taylor said: “At SuperStars we are passionate about developing a child’s future. As part of our offering we have launched this new initiative having been approached by a number of schools looking for innovative ways to teach children leadership skills and interactive ways to develop and nurture these skills.

“This programme aims to help children build their skills through fun and active learning and we are delighted to be working closely with Tremains Primary School which is committed to achieve our vision of developing bright and healthy futures for future generations. We are looking forwarded to rolling this initiative out to more schools across south Wales in September.”

Established by James Taylor in 2005, the Cardiff-based company was originally launched as SportStars before being rebranded in 2010 to incorporate the company’s diverse offering including sports coaching, art and music lessons, afterschool clubs and holiday courses. Since launching, the company has continued to roll out its services across the UK, opening offices in Bristol, Hereford and Liverpool.
